Backend Search Terms

On August 17th, 2017 Amazon changed the rules again with regards to the number of characters you can have in your backend search terms field for a product.

The new character limit for all of your generic search term fields combined (you have a maximum of 5 lines available) is just 250 characters.

This means that it is more important now then ever before to optimise what you have in your backend search term fields.

Amazon also say that you should not include keywords in your backend search terms that you have already included elsewhere in your listing (title, bullets or description).

What does this mean for keyword research?

Since most of your keyword research is probably done by analysing what your competition have, in terms of keywords, in their title, bullets and description you really could be missing some additional lucrative search terms that they have hidden away in the backend.

They could have 10-20 keywords in the generic search term fields of their listing that are producing 1-2 sales each per day.

That’s a potential 40 sales per day you could be missing out on!

Wouldn’t you like to grab those keywords to use in your own listing?

That’s where LionCow Spy comes in handy…

Simply take the ASIN’s of your competitor’s products and paste them into the LionCow Spy tool.

Within a few seconds you’ll be able to download a CSV file containing the EXACT information that your competitors have in their backend fields.

Now you can use their exact keywords in your listing too!

Here’s an example result from LionCow Spy

These are the EXACT search terms that OXO is using in their backend fields.

The commas in the results indicate line breaks so this is how they look in Oxo’s backend fields:

Imagine if you could get a file containing the EXACT backend search terms from your top 5-10 competitor’s products…

The real question is, can you afford not to know the keywords that could be generating additional sales for your competition?
